Veterans Plaza - Runway of Honor

Wings Over the Rockies is excited to announce the launch of our Veterans Plaza Brick Campaign!

The Runway of Honor will be located at Lowry beneath the B-52 taking off and flying west.  Bordered by runway lights, the Runway of Honor will be comprised of commemorative bricks inscribed with names of Veterans, aviators, family and friends.  These bricks will forever link yourself or a loved one to the past and present of Aviation history and our country’s Veterans.

Express your pride -- celebrate, recognize, commemorate, remember, honor or memorialize a family member, a friend or an event. Honor people, who have achieved great things, touched lives, made a positive impact on our nation or provided the ultimate sacrifice.

Placing a personalized brick in the Runway of Honor provides a unique and lasting way to honor someone’s life and achievements to their country and aviation.

"There is no greater honor we can pay our veterans than to immortalize them for generations to come. We must capture their stories and cement the memory of their service into our hearts, allowing their spirits to soar on into the future."

Christina Olds, daughter of Brig. Gen. (USAF, ret.) Robin Olds

Wings' Iconic B-52 Bomber Gets New Home

On Thursday, October 21st at 11:00AM Wings Museum raised its massive B-52 bomber onto large pedestals. The operation was part of the bigger Gateway to Flight entryway that the museum is building. The lift was a joint effort between Ridge Erection and Winslow Crane with Brown/Schrepferman Construction as general contractors.

The day was marked with ceremony and remembrance by the museum staff and volunteers as well as dignitaries Mr. Tom Markham of the Lowry Redevelopment Authority, General Tru Eyre of the Colorado Air National Guard, Mr. Joe Vostrejs of Hangar @ Partners, and Diane Gates of the Gates Family Foundation. Ms. Gates sent the bomber on its last "flight" with the words "Wings B-52, you are cleared for take off." With those words twin cranes lifted the hulking aircraft more than 20 feet into the air to place her gently onto her new resting place 14 feet above the ground.

As a way to document the day Wings filmed the entire day with a time lapse camera. Please enjoy a quick overview of the momentous day. Click HERE to view the video. One of our great volunteers, Brian Olson, put together this great video of the day that shows some of the highlights of the lift and the ceremonies. Check it out HERE.
