6th Annual Spreading Wings Gala 2009
Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum today announced Harrison Ford as this year’s honoree at its 6th Annual Spreading Wings Gala taking place on Nov. 14.
Ford will receive the organization’s distinguished Spreading Wings Award at the event honoring those who have dedicated their lives to flight and advances in aviation. In addition to promoting his personal love of aviation through many of his films, including Star Wars, Air Force One, Six Days, Seven Nights and the Indiana Jones series, Ford is an accomplished pilot who generously gives his time to help support a variety of aviation-related organizations, including the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Ford is a national spokesperson for EAA Young Eagles, which provides volunteer pilots to fly more than 1.4 million young people giving them a personal flight experience.
“We are honored to recognize Harrison Ford with the Spreading Wings Award at this year’s Gala for his tireless dedication to promoting aviation and the aerospace community,” said Greg Anderson, president and CEO of the Wings Over the Rockies. “His continued support of aviation-related organizations and nonprofits makes him the ideal recipient for this unique award."
The Spreading Wings Gala celebrates and sustains Colorado’s distinguished leadership in aviation and space with proceeds supporting the Wings Over the Rockies Museum and the Spreading Wings Education Outreach program.
The Gala will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum located at 7711 East Academy Blvd. The event will feature cocktails, dinner, a live auction and a special presentation by Ford.

Wings Aviation Science Program (WASP)
Wings’ Aviation Science Program (WASP) is a hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum developed by teachers for teachers. The program uses the magic of aviation to spark students’ interest in math and science. It includes an activity kit stocked with all the supplies necessary to conduct fun-filled experiments with a class of 30 students. It also includes WebQuests which supplement the learning achieved in the classroom with engaging internet research missions. Teachers who are interested in implementing WASP in their classrooms can sign up for the free, one-day trainings offered throughout the State. Contact the Education Department to reserve your place.

Wings' Youngest Fundraiser
Nine-year old Tristan Ropa is a third grader at the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning in Denver with big ideals and a more mature way to follow through.
The school’s mission is to empower their students “to be learners, thinkers, citizens and explorers engaged in and inspired by the real world.” Their motto is “We are crew, not passengers.”
Tristen proved he was a valuable Wings’ crew member when he set his sights on raising money for Wings this month, thus becoming our youngest funder.
RMSEL is not a traditional school and students at RMSEL do not receive traditional grades for their work, but have Portfolios that demonstrate their learning and character. At several points (3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th grades) RMSEL students go through “Passages,” an intensive process of putting together their Portfolios and reflections on their work, all for presentation to a Passages Panel that will determine whether or not the student is ready to move on to the next grade level. As part of their Portfolios, each student must complete a service project and do a write up on it. Some of the things suggested at the third-grade level are helping an elderly neighbor, donating to a food bank or collecting toys for a shelter.
Tristan and his mother were discussing what kind of service would be meaningful to him, and he asked if Wings was a nonprofit organization (he knows what nonprofits are, since Lori works for one). He said he loved the museum and really wanted to donate some money to it so it would always be there.
On May 9, Tristan, his mother and many of his friends arrived at Wings to present Tristan’s $71 fund raising effort to the museum. Museum staff members were ready to accept his contribution and reward him with a Wings T-shirt, customized dog tags, a certificate of appreciation and a Wings’ lapel pin. After the introductions, thank yous and presentation of the money, Tristan and his friends toured the Museum and even had a chance to get pictures taken with some of the Museum’s costumed Star Wars volunteers. Tristan's full story will be in the next edition of Wingspan, the Wings' quarterly newsletter.

Stories from Space - 40th Anniversary of the moon landing Join us July 18, for 2009’s finale of Stories from Space. This event coincides with the 40th anniversary of the moon landing in 1969. Our special guest for this event is VAdm. (Ret.) Richard Truly, USN. Join us as he discusses his role in space along with the ramifications the moon landing had on his career.
His first flight into space (STS-2, Nov. 12-14, 1981) was as pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia, significant as the first manned spacecraft to be re-flown in space. His second flight (STS-8, Aug. 30 to Sept. 5, 1983) was as commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger, which was the first night launch and landing in the Shuttle program. In 1983, VAdm. Truly named as the first commander of the Naval Space Command, Dahlgren, Virginia. He served as NASA Administrator from 1989-1992. As a Naval Aviator and test pilot, he has more than 7,000 hours in numerous military jet aircraft.
As a special bonus, author Craig Nelson, of the new book Rocket Men – a detailed account of the efforts leading up to and those following the landing on the moon – will be on hand to discuss his new book. Guests can purchase his book on-site and have him sign their copy.
This special edition of Stories from Space is included in admission price to the Museum, FREE for members, and goes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wings Over the Rockies. |
